Polish Composer Kryzsztof Penderecki initially became known for his 1959 work Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima (a work initially, and less evocatively called 8\u00b437″); he also remained in the limelight for his association with the Solidarity movement in Poland, and with religious dissident activity in Poland. Over the years, since he first began writing under the influences of Pierre Boulez, his style has softened somewhat, and he has opened up more to lyric fantasy and good spirits. The string trio gives full character to each of the three instruments – each breaks out of the opening solidities into its own character with its own questions.
